Tribute to Mr Lee Kuan Yew

written on Sunday, March 29, 2015 @ 11:52 AM ♥

Dear Mr Lee Kuan Yew,

Today we mourn the 7th day since your passing and it has been a sad journey for the whole of Singapore.

I am borned in the 1980s and eventhough I did not watch you emerge as the Prime Minister, or even during your years as the Prime Minister of Singapore, I grew up enjoying the fruits of your labour.

Growing up, we were never rich to say but had enough to make a living and we never have to worry about our basic necessities. We had a 4-room HDB for shelter, water from the tap to drink, both my parents have jobs to survive and my brother and I started school since Kindergarten. I complained and whined as a child whenever my mother refuses to buy me the a Gameboy or Tamogochi, however I never knew that back in her time (until recently), that she played with dolls made of rags and catches tadpoles in river in her kampong.

Things were vastly different in her time so both my parents were very frugal in the early days of my childhood for fear that one day, things will change back again.

But things never did change back again. Just as you have promised in 1977:

"This was a mudflat, a swamp.
Today, it is a modern city.
And 10 years from now on, it will be a metropolis - never fear!"

My only regret is that I did not care enough to learn, understand and appreciate Singapore's history until your passing, when the many articles/news/speeches started surfacing online. These few days, I have read and watched on both your life and Singapore's history, and even with that, I am uncertain if this is even half of what had happened so far.

For that, I am deeply ashamed of how eventhough I reap the many benefits of the system, I did not stop to listen in on what is going on around me.

For now on, I will try.

You have my word.

Thank you for your commitment in guilding Singapore to where we are now.

I have come to admire your wits and confidence in looking forward when times were tough. Your dedication to work is especially touching when I read through Mr Heng Swee Keat's article on your red box

I have come to respect your integrity and pragmatic approach when governing. Your determination to root out corruption from the start has benefitted the whole of modern Singapore.

I have come to adore the loving and faithful side of you for your soulmate and spouse, Madam Kwa Geok Choo. My favourite is when you kiss your fingers and implants them on your wife twice when sending her off for the last time. Your daughter, Miss Lee Wei Ling, also wrote a touching piece on your love for each other which made me teared.

Last but not least, I have come to feel proud that I am a Singaporean. Recently, my parents and I joined the Great Singapore queue to pay our respects to you at the Parliament and I cannot be prouder to be there to experience the Singapore Spirit. So many of us chipped in to care, share and provide as much as everyone can, in such little ways that astonished even the critics. I have never felt so much warmth in Sunny Singapore before and I sincerely thank you for uniting Singapore for one last time.

I have a million 'Thank You's that I would like to say to you but I know the best way to show my gratitude is to continue working hard for Singapore. To continue your legacy and protect what you have built up over the years.

For one last time, thank you.

May you rest in peace.

With Love,
Hui Xian

The Great Singapore Queue

written on Friday, March 27, 2015 @ 11:00 PM ♥

4PM // Started in good spirits and mentally prepared for 10 hour queue.

440PM // First waiting zone - Assigned a tent and sitting around Padang, it was cooling and nice to be able to sit. We were told to make ourselves comfortable because the wait here will be about 1 -2 hours. Ground staff and volunteers started giving out drinks, snacks and offering to collect our trash.

510PM // We moved towards the underground for Esplanade.

550PM // Toilet break at Esplanade then continue walking to Floating Platform. Can see MBS!

Thank you, whoever you are, for the loaning everyone the huge umbrellas!

630PM // Second waiting zone - sitting inside the Floating Platform's carpark. Everyone around me is amazingly still in good spirits. Just feeling hot.

We get to sit so I get to eat the QQrice I packed for us as dinner here. Yum.

7PM // Moved out of Floating Platform to U-turn towards Padang again lol. At least the sun is setting hurray!

730PM // An Ang Moh walking around Esplanade area asked the people infront of us if there is a rock concert nearby lol! That totally cracked my mum up.

The guys explained to him that it's to pay respect to our Founding Father.

8PM // In front of Victoria Concert hall. 4 hours into the queue. Wah tired liao shit. My backpack is getting lighter with every drink/food we consume but it feels heavier zzzz. Hope my parents can take it.

830PM // Someone lost a member of their group so everyone helped to shout 'Zi Hui! Zi Hui!!' and she made her way through the crowd to reunite with them.

Everyone is just so smiley, friendly and nice while queueing, albeit with complains.

Niceee one Fullerton.

915PM // After you see the parliament, everything happens very fast. You enter and exit in less than 5 mins.

A quick bow to Mr Lee and you gotta move on to avoid jamming the queue.

Total queue time: 5h 15 mins. Phew.

The longest queue I've ever queued but quite an efficient and comfortable one. Food, drinks and umbrellas are readily available any time you want. Volunteers are always walking around to collect your rubbish. Toilets strategically placed. Ground personnels always ready to explain the current queue time or what's happening.

A genuine touch by volunteers and personnels to help those who really want to send Mr Lee off. Glad that the public is pretty generous with their 'Thank you's to everyone helping out as well.

Singapore feels very warm today; and Singaporeans too.

What is also eye-opening is that we're also witnessing a different side of Singapore we never thought existed.

For those who say that Singaporeans are spoiled, selfish, always complaining and mercenary, what would they make of what's happening now: tens of thousands, soon-to-be hundreds, and possibly a million before the week is out, queueing for hours in the hot sun without a peep of disgruntlement. No one told them to do it. There are no freebies at the end of this queue. There are no goodie bags to be had, no fancy aerial displays, no ballot sheets to tick, no certificates of participation awaiting.

Yet there is nothing but stoic contemplation, a people united by sadness but at the same time, an amazing, totally unscripted display of goodwill and community. People are chipping in to help with free water, flowers, food and general kindness for one's fellow man. Without any expectations of reward or publicity - just plain human decency.

Things you get to do when you have Time

written on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 @ 5:59 PM ♥

The grass is always greener on the other side.

And that is how contradicted I feel, as always.

How I would love to have all the time in the world to do things I like and then when you really do have it, I hope that Life can be a little more fulfilling and busy.

So here's something for the record in case I get busy again and my lousy brains forget how I spent and appreciate the time I have these days:

  • Quality time with my brother

Holla Amigo!

It's interesting how we don't talk or do much stuff together on Sundays eventhough we are always at home. Weekends are for me-time I guess; To finish up that drama series or to level up in a game (for his case) or most importantly, to catch up on our sleep debt.

But change the day to a weekday when you have to go get lunch yourself and things changes. Buying lunch then eating together makes us talk more, laugh more and just enjoy each other's company. Something that does not happens often because we ae so used to annoying the hell out of each other.

Totally appreciate times like this when I get to know more about his work, girlfriend and point of view... so I won't keep thinking he's an oddball lol. #siblingrivalry

  • Time to keep fit

Sweaty Fun in the Yoga Studio

One important aspect of life that I always push aside because of time is exercise. To me, it is so difficult to pull myself out of wherever I am and drag myself to exercise. There are some who don't mind dropping by the gym after a tiring day at work, only to put in more sweat and hardwork on the treadmill - but that person is not me.

This means that whenever I'm busy, omg rejoice, because that's the perfect excuse to skip it! But I know, this is not beneficial for me at all. I could generally lose some weight, gain some muscles and just be healthier.

Hence now, there is no more excuse for those lazy bones. Yoga also makes me stronger in terms of endurance and focus so I am currently quite addicted to this shiok feeling which I have never had before!!

  • Time to pursue my hobbies

Homemade Sugee Cookies for Chinese New Year

Pork Ribs, Lotus Root, Peanut and Cuttlefish Soup

Reading, cooking and baking. All of which needs a lot of time.

Nothing beats having time to fully explore and try an ingredient, a new bake or a new book. Personal enjoyment which gives me a lot of satisfaction.

There are downsides to having a carefree lifestyle though so I hope this won't last for long. But days when I feel positive, this truly is a good life to have.

One that matters and feeds the soul.

To stop and appreciate Life

written on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 @ 12:32 AM ♥

  • Loving parents who are always there for me
  • A bed made more comfortable recently with a new quilt I got from IKEA
  • Friends to celebrate jolly Christmas with
  • Eyes to see and health to explore
  • Being generally happy everyday
  • Sufficient time for adequate rest, to pick up something new and to pack my SUPER MESSY ROOM

Life is all about giving and taking. You win some and you lose some. Eventhough it seems like I'm on a losing streak lately but Life is like that.

Once this is over, I'm going to go up up UP!

I turned 26!

written on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 @ 12:13 AM ♥

As the moon comes out and the clock strikes twelve... I am officially 26 now.

Sitting on the cold floor and speed-blogging about adding candles onto my cake in an extremely messy room is totally what my life is about right now - Alone, hectic and messy.

But it's not all bad.  :)

So how was 25? Challenging.

Last year, this time I was jobless. Hopping out of my first job which was comfortable and secure, I stepped into the real world where it has been one rude awakening after the next.

Life has been crazy the past year and I have probably experienced more ups and downs than all the previous years combined. It seems to get more and more difficult with time and in the process you just learned how to deal with all of this. I know this sounds too depressing for a birthday post but it is not that bad.

With time, I think I grew stronger mentally and learned to make difficult decisions. Built up a truckload of experiences behind me and am more able to express myself which is great! I know who I am and am comfortable with being me. More at peace with myself as well instead of internal debates between the brain and the heart.

As I get older, I believe life will only get more and more trying because more responsibilites follows with age.

Therefore, this year, I wish that my heart will always be the same no matter my age.

Time will make me older and wiser, but there will always be a fun-loving and silly me at the core. I must not let the downs affect me. Hopefully I will always be game to try something new, willing to help others in need and laughing out loud even during stormy days.

Happy Birthday to me!

Rejuvenating the windows to my soul with MegRhythm

written on Friday, August 15, 2014 @ 3:15 PM ♥

Lately, I've been seeing MegRhythm's Steam Eye Mask around whenever I popped by any Watsons/Guardian stores and my itchy fingers have been wanting to grab a pack home to try!

Tell me this picture doesn't make you want to run to your bed right now

I was half attracted by the girl in the picture who looks so relaxed and peaceful plus looking for a product that can rejuvenate my over-worked preppers.  (x_x)

I believe most of us face the computer/phone/TV for at least 8 hours a day (damn you work! but love you, my k dramas :) and I think that's definitely too much for eyes eventhough we don't feel it on a day-to-day basis.

That is until I pay a visit to the optician for a new pair of spectacles and to no one's surprise, my degrees increased again. Hence I think it's highly important that we start taking care of our eyes before it gets a point when it's too late for regrets.

One part of it is finding the time to relax our eyes and MegRhythm's Steam Eye Mask is worth a try!

Eye mask looks too cute and girly! Once opened, MegRhythm's Steam Eye Mask warms up to a comfortable 40°C which slowly envelops your eyes.

I particularly liked the fact that there are ear loops for me to hook around my ears because I'm a side-sleeper. This means that I can truely relaxed and toss and turn wherever I like without worrying about the position of the mask because I am super unglam once I fall into deep sleep.

As the eye mask gradually heats up, my eyes are treated to a warm steam bath which is pretty soothing though a little uncomfortable at first. Once I get used to the heat, it actually feels like placing a warm towel over my eyes and is pretty chillaxing.

Check out what really happens in the video below:

Let it sit around for 10 minutes and I feel it actually helps you to relax and sleep better.

If you're a scent-lover, you would be happy to know that they come in 3 different scents; OR if you're not a scent-lover, they have unscented ones too!

Available in four variants (scents):
Fresh Rose, Lavender, Chamomile and Unscented

Go ahead and get request for a free sample at http://web.kao.com/sg/megrhythm or simple head there for more information on MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask.

In addition to that, stand a chance to win a relaxtion kit worth $50 when you join their Instagram contest! When you:
  • Follow @MegRhythmSG on Instagram
  • Share a photo of yourself using #MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask in the most unique position and state what you like about it
  • Tag @MegRhythmSG and hashtag #MegRhythm in your caption

Good luck!

Waking up to Healthy Bed Hair with Essential

written on Monday, July 28, 2014 @ 1:34 PM ♥

It's every girl's dream to wake up with a sexy bedhead...

Look at those effortlessly tousled fluffy hair. Smooth, fluffy but not frizzy.

For a few lucky ones, a night of tossing and turning around in bed totally worked in their favour and they looked so sexy and cute fresh out of bed.

But there are also the unlucky ones, me included, who looked like super messed up after a night of tossing and turning in bed.

I never knew the reason for this until I came across Essential's new Leave-On Treatment Range which protects our hair from pillow damage!

Essential Leave-On Treatment Milk (100ml)
Retail Price: $11.90
For over-night intensive repair.

Essential Leave-On Hair Serum (60ml)
Retail Price: $11.90
For all day instant repair.

So the main reason for all this frizziness is because of pillow damage which to be honest never came across my mind.

I always thought it's a natural thing for my hair to be all frizzled up every morning and hello there, the culprit for my bad bedhead - Ms Toss!

Tried Essential Leave-On Treatment Milk on a Friday night so I can look good on a Saturday morning for myself lol. Just pump an appropriate amount of the product onto your palm, apply it evenly onto towel-dried/damp hair and go to bed!

My thoughts after application is that it's non-greasy (you can feel the greasiness or none-of-it on your palms after application) which I like, because my skin is very sensitive to hair oils. Whenever I apply any leave-on hair serum/oil overnight, I tend to wake up with a few zits here and there because of it. Glad that this doesn't happen the next morning!

Here's a look at my hair the night before using Essential and the next morning after using Essential:

Review
Hair looks better the next morning after applying the leave-on treatment for a night and as you can see from the pictures - hair is less frizzy, looks flowy and feels smoother! Plus point is that it smells good too! A tinge of floral scent but not too overwhelming.
(Colour of the photos differs slightly because one is taken under fluorescent light and the other under sunlight hence it's a little more saturated.)

Gonna apply this regularly and hope that with frizziness out of the way now, I will wake up with a sexy bedhead one day. :D

If you are keen on trying before buying, head over to http://on.fb.me/1hUqJoA to get your free sample of Essential Sleeping Hair Mask today!

Outfit Shots

written on Sunday, July 27, 2014 @ 1:15 AM ♥

Blog has been a little neglected lately because I'm still getting used to my new job so here's some #ootd shots I posted on Instagram lately to fill up this space in the meantime! :)

Dress from Megagamie
Bag from Love, Bonito
Shoes from Ezra

Romper from Tracyeinny
Bag from Love, Bonito
Sandals from Cotton On

Crop Top from Thread Theory
Midi Skirt from AforArcade
Bag from Charles & Keith

Top from Love and Bravery
Midi Skirt from AforArdcade
Shoes and Bag from Charles & Keith

Seems like most of my clothes are from blogshops nowadays!

Gone are the days of shopping in retail stores, digging out cute tops & dresses and then carrying bags of loots home all satisfied and contented. :(

I just can't find unique and affordable clothes from retail stores anymore so I have switched to online shopping but it is defnitely not as satisfying as shopping in brick and mortar stores. Online shopping is really risky because you can't try and see the fabric for yourself before making purchases - 50% of the time they turned out to be a size too big/small or the fabric sucks. SIAN!

That being said, there are times when I received a clothing that is a lot better than how I imagined it to be too. But always a 50:50 chance.

Thankfully blogshops are improving day by day in quality and price.
